This is the exact guidance I give in my treatment room:
• Use retinol 1-2 nights per week to start.
Retinol must go through two conversion steps in the skin:
Retinol → Retinaldehyde → Retinoic Acid (active form)
This conversion happens inside the skin over 24–72 hours. The biological effects (cell turnover signals) continue for several days after application. This is why applying retinol too frequently early on often leads to irritation. Even though you apply retinol once, your skin is “processing” it for 2–3 days.
• Apply to clean, completely dry skin
• Use a pea-sized amount for the entire face
• Follow with a barrier-supporting moisturizer
• Increase frequency slowly over 6–8 weeks
• Wear SPF every single morning - this is non-negotiable
Flaking, burning, and constant breakouts aren’t “results.” They’re signs your skin isn’t ready.
Why retinol sometimes “doesn’t work." In my experience, it’s usually because:
• The strength is wrong for the skin
• The barrier wasn’t repaired first
• Too many actives are layered together
• There’s inconsistency (retinol is cumulative, not instant)
Retinol works best when it’s personalized, not trendy.
My professional takeaway after 20 years. Retinol isn’t about aggressive peeling or chasing quick results. It’s about building healthy, resilient, collagen-rich skin that improves year after year.
When chosen correctly, whether that’s Glow Getter or Wrinkle Warrior, and used with intention, retinol is one of the most transformative tools we have. And when it’s wrong? It can undo months of progress.
If you’re questioning your retinol, you’re not behind; you’re uninformed. And that’s exactly where great skin begins.
